Job Advertisement: Skipper/Deckhand
The Polar Research Secretariat is a government agency that promotes and coordinates Swedish polar research. The agency is responsible for long-term planning of research and research infrastructure as well as organizing and conducting research expeditions in the Arctic and Antarctica.
The agency's overarching goal is to contribute to increased international impact for Swedish polar research through collaboration, high-quality research infrastructure, and international partnerships.
The operations include, among other things, Abisko Scientific Station, Kristineberg Marine Research Station, the icebreaker Oden, and the Swedish research stations Wasa and Svea in Antarctica. The Polar Research Secretariat has about 50 employees and is located in Luleå, Abisko, Helsingborg, and Fiskebäckskil.
The Kristineberg Marine Research Station is responsible for promoting and coordinating marine research and development, including marine polar research. Kristineberg is a national research infrastructure and serves as a central platform for marine, coastal, and deep-sea related research. Research vessels and small boats are a central part of the station's operations.
The Polar Research Secretariat is now seeking a committed and experienced skipper/deckhand for intermittent employment at the Kristineberg Marine Research Station.
Job Responsibilities
You will work aboard the research vessel Alice and on a new vessel that is being introduced into operations (catamaran), as well as, if necessary, on the smaller boats available at the Kristineberg Marine Research Station.
Together with the rest of the crew, you will be responsible for the vessel, its navigation, and the advanced sampling equipment used in research and education.
The job responsibilities include, among others:
- handling equipment and tools on deck in the role of deckhand
- ensuring a high level of safety on board
- practical maintenance of vessels and equipment, ranging from hand trawls to heavier tools
- handling sampling equipment such as CTD, water samplers, scrapers, and trawls
Work on short notice may occur.
Requirements
To be considered for the position, you must have:
- Basic Safety Training
- Certificate of Competency for Vessel Master Class VIII
- Valid medical certificate for seafarers
- Valid ROC certificate
- Very good ability to speak and write in Swedish and English
Meritorious
It is meritorious if you have:
- Crowd and Crisis Management
- Certification for hot work
- Training in safe lifting
- Forklift license and certification for harbor crane
- Experience handling CTD, various water samplers, scrapers, and cutters
Personal Qualities
We are looking for someone who is attentive to the needs of research and education during sampling and research assignments. You have good collaboration skills and enjoy working with various professional categories in an international environment. You have a high safety awareness and are responsible.
Other
The employment is a special fixed-term position (intermittent hourly employment as needed) during the period from March 2026 to February 2027. You have the right to accept or decline each work opportunity.
